Substances to Avoid
Be careful to avoid contact when using these common household
substances around your carpeting. Also be sure to wash your hands
after using these substances.
- Bleaches (both chlorine and "safe" oxygen kinds)
- Insecticides
- Strong alkalis (such as drain and oven cleaners)
- Acne medications containing benzoyl peroxide

Vacuuming
Regular vacuuming is key to keeping your carpet looking its best. In high-
traffic areas, dirt becomes embedded in the pile and causes matting.
Vacuum these areas as often as possible. Less heavily used areas can
be maintained with a once-a-week vacuuming. Vacuum about three passes
for light cleaning and seven passes when there's more soil.

Traffic Patterns
Over time, normal foot traffic can change your carpet's appearance.
Redirecting traffic patterns can lengthen your carpet's life. Rearrange
furniture periodically to give some areas of your carpet a "rest."

Crushing
Your carpet will display "crushing" where heavy objects are placed.
To raise the pile to its original height, pass a hot steam iron over the
indentations. But be sure to keep the iron no closer than six inches over
the carpet to avoid burning.
If a tuft becomes snagged or loosens, cut off the frays and let the
surrounding yarn fill in the space.

Professional Cleaning
Regular cleaning is essential. Depending on the extent of traffic, we recommend professional
carpet cleaning every 18 to 24 months.
